A PICTURE AND A POEM: SHADOW

FOR THIS DAY
(GOOD FRIDAY)

Light increasing
Days lengthening
Darkness waning

Shadow remaining.

Cardinals singing
Buds revealing
Nestlings peeping

Silence keeping.

Hope warming
Peace softening
Love surrounding

Grief abounding.

Tomb opening
Life emerging
Joy unfolding

Cross beholding…

  1. Surely there had been some error;
how could God abide this loss?
How can we all face the terror
of the shadow of the Cross?
How can we forget the water
    flowing from His spear-torn side?
How can we get past His slaughter
with no place to go to hide?
Now they’ve placed Him in a tomb,
wrapped in linen touched with spice,
in the dark decay of gloom,
and there’s no way we can splice
all the hope of days gone past
    to tomorrow’s brave hold-fast.
